Getting your own texting number

With a paid plan your texts go out from your own toll-free number, with your business name on every message. Phone carriers check that a number belongs to a real business before it can send. Here is what that looks like, start to finish.

  1. 1

    Choose a plan

Your own number comes with a paid plan. On the free trial you can still build lists, write drafts and send one trial message to yourself and up to 4 teammates.

  2. 2

    Choose what you'll text

Carriers approve each kind of text separately: offers and news to your list, reminders about an event someone chose, or updates about something they bought or booked. Choose only what you'll really send, with an example of each. Replying to people who text you first is always allowed and needs nothing.

  3. 3

Put a sign-up box on your page for each kind

Carriers want to see where people agree to each kind of text. Ayo! gives you the wording for each box, and checks each sign-up page before anything is sent to them.

  4. 4

    Tell us about your business

Give Ayo! your website and it reads the site and fills in what it finds. You check every answer. Carriers compare the form with your website, so the two need to match.

  5. 5

    Carriers check your business

This usually takes 3 to 5 business days. Until then you can build lists and drafts, and send test messages to your own phone.

  6. 6

    Your number is ready

Your texts now go out from your own toll-free number, with your business name on every message. Anyone who texts it lands in your Inbox.

What to have ready

  • Your legal business name, exactly as on your IRS records
  • Your EIN, the 9-digit federal tax ID. A sole owner with no EIN can still apply.
  • Your website, or a public Facebook or Google Business page if you do not have one
  • An example of each kind of text you would really send

If the carriers ask for changes

It happens, and it is fixable. Ayo! tells you in plain words what to change, and the steps show what is done and what is left. Your answers are saved as you go. Carriers keep a correction's place in the queue for 7 days, so it is worth doing soon.

We cannot promise a date. The carriers decide, and some businesses take longer than others. We tell you as soon as they answer.
