Texting slang, explained

What does “ayo” mean in texting?

The short answer

"Ayo" is short for "hey yo". It is a quick, friendly way to say "hey you!" or "hey, what's up?" It is not an acronym, so the letters A, Y and O do not each stand for a word.

The three ways people text it

Same three letters, three different jobs. Where it sits in the message tells you which one you got.

As a hello

The plain one. "Ayo" opens a conversation the way "hey" or "yo" does. It is friendly and relaxed, the kind of hello you send a friend, not a client.

ayohey! what's upyou coming tonight?

To get your attention

Louder than a hello. "Ayo" at the start of a message means "listen, this matters" or "are you there?" You will often see it with extra letters when someone has been waiting.

ayooothe doors open at 7, where are youparking now

As a "wait, what?"

On its own, in reply to something surprising or out of line, "ayo" is a raised eyebrow. It means "hold on, did you really just say that?" It is usually a joke between friends.

I just ate the whole pizzaayo??it was a small one

Is AYO an acronym?

No. It looks like one because so much texting slang is: LOL, BRB, IDK. But “ayo” is a shortened phrase, “hey yo”, not three letters that each stand for a word. If you see it in capitals, someone is just being loud. You will also see it spelled “ayoo”, “ayooo”, “a-yo”, “eyo” and “heyo”. They all mean the same thing, and more letters mean more feeling.

Quick answers

What does ayo stand for in texting?
"Hey yo". Say "hey yo" fast and you get "ayo". It means "hey you!" or "hey, what's up?" It is a shortened phrase, not an acronym, so the three letters do not each stand for a word.
What does ayo mean in a text?
Most of the time it means "hey" or "hey, what's up?" It can also mean "listen up" when someone wants your attention, or "wait, what?" when they are reacting to something surprising.
Where does ayo come from?
It is "hey yo" said quickly: "hey" and "yo" run together. Dictionaries that record it list it as an English slang greeting, with printed examples going back to the 2000s.
Is ayo rude?
No. It is casual, so it suits friends more than a boss or a customer, but it is not an insult. Tone decides the rest: "ayo!" is a warm hello, and "ayo??" is a friendly "excuse me?"
How do you reply to ayo?
The same way you would reply to "hey". Say hi back, or answer what they asked. If they sent it as a reaction to something you said, they are waiting for you to explain yourself.
Does ayo mean something else?
Yes. Ayo is also a name in Yoruba, a language spoken in Nigeria, where it means joy. That is a different word from the texting slang, and the two are not related.

The dictionary sense (a greeting made from “hey” and “yo”) is from Wiktionary's entry for "ayo". The other two uses are how people text it today.

Ayo! is also a texting service

If you run a business, “Ayo!” is how you get your people's attention.

Our name is the same word: Ayo! is a greeting made from "hey" and "yo".

That is us. Ayo! lets a business text everyone who asked to hear from it, and you run it from your own phone by texting. You say what you want in plain words, like “tell the VIP list doors open at 7 tonight.” You get a preview, you reply YES, and it goes out.
